HTN, LTN, MTN: The PSL Tier Ladder Explained Before It Eats Your Brain

Tier Brain
HTN, LTN, MTN, chadlite. Tier talk escaped the forums and took over TikTok, Omoggle and every rating app. Here is what each tier means, why nobody agrees on the numbers, and what actually moves you up.
Key takeaways
- HTN means high-tier normie. LTN and MTN are low- and mid-tier normie. Together they cover the big middle of the PSL scale, where most guys get sorted.
- Nobody agrees on the numbers. One list calls HTN a 6, a forum thread says 5.5 to 6.25, and the same face can land in two tiers depending on who rates it.
- Research says about half of any looks rating comes from the rater's personal taste, so treat your tier as a vibe check instead of a stat.
What HTN, LTN and MTN mean
HTN stands for high-tier normie. LTN is low-tier normie and MTN is mid-tier normie. They all come from the PSL scale, the forum rating system named after three old looks forums: PUAHate, SlutHate and Lookism. If someone in your comments calls you MTN, they mean you look average. HTN is the good-looking version of average, the guy your friends call lowkey handsome.
Normie is the word doing the work. In forum language, normies are the huge middle of the bell curve: not low enough for sub5, not striking enough for chadlite. The forums slice that middle into thirds, then stack more prefixes on top. HMTN means high MTN, LHTN means low HTN. It gets absurd fast.
Women get their own ladder with Becky in place of normie: LTB, MTB and HTB, then Stacylite and Stacy. Same logic, same problems.
The full PSL tier ladder
Here is the ladder as most lists draw it, bottom to top. The numbers are the popular mapping, and nobody treats them as exact.
- Sub3 and sub5: forum slang for well below average. Usually cruel, sometimes self-roasting. The mogging dictionary has the rest of this vocabulary.
- LTN, low-tier normie: around a 4. Plain, a few obvious leaks, nobody turns around.
- MTN, mid-tier normie: around a 5. The literal middle, where most people live.
- HTN, high-tier normie: around a 6. Good-looking in a normal way. Gets called handsome by people who are not his mom.
- Chadlite: around a 7. Clearly attractive, model-adjacent in good photos.
- Chad and up: 8 and above, with Slayer, GigaChad and PSL god stacked on top as the meme tiers.
Nobody agrees on the numbers
Put two tier lists side by side and the math falls apart. Popular lists put LTN at 4, MTN at 5, HTN at 6 and chadlite at 7. One long looksmax.org thread squeezes everything tighter: MTN at 5 to 5.5, HTN at 5.5 to 6.25, chadlite at 6.25 to 6.75. Under that system a 6.5 is chadlite. Under the other he is a mid HTN.
Then there is the scale itself. PSL is supposed to be harsher than a normal 1 to 10, so a forum 5 and your friend calling you a 5 mean different things. People mix both scales in the same comment section and argue about decimals nobody ever measured.
That is the tell. A real measurement gives you the same answer twice. Tier ratings change every time someone new looks at a new photo.
What attractiveness research actually says
People do agree on faces to a real degree, so that part of the PSL worldview is not invented. But a 2006 study that had people rate the same faces twice, a week apart, found that private taste and shared taste each explain roughly half of a rating. Half of your tier is the person scoring you.
Photos add more noise. A selfie from about a foot away makes your nose look around 30% wider than a photo from five feet, which is how the same face bounces between MTN and HTN depending on arm length. The proportionmaxxing guide covers the camera trap in detail.
Why tier talk took over the feed
Tier labels showed up on the forums around 2019 and stayed niche for years. Then TikTok rating edits, Omoggle mog-offs and streamers like Clavicular dragged PSL vocabulary into normal comment sections. By the time Dictionary.com named maxxing its 2026 Word of the Year, calling someone HTN at best was a normal reply under a gym video.
Rating apps poured fuel on it. Scan a selfie, get a number, pay to see the breakdown. UMAX and its clones turned the tier ladder into a product, and a tier feels more official when an app prints it in a nice font.
What actually moves someone up a tier
Bones are mostly fixed. Presentation is wide open. These are the levers that change how people rate you in real life.
- Leanness: lower body fat shows your jaw and cheekbones. For most guys this is the biggest single swing available.
- Hair: a cut that fits your face shape and hair density. A bad haircut can cost a whole tier on its own.
- Skin: cleanser, moisturizer, SPF and an acne plan. Clear skin reads healthier and younger. Start with skinmaxxing basics.
- Frame and posture: delts, lats and a neck that is not permanently craned at a laptop. Framemaxxing covers the training.
- Grooming: eyebrows cleaned up, beard shaped along the jaw, teeth looked after.
- Style and photos: clothes that fit, daylight photos from five feet away, and no mirror selfies under a bathroom bulb.
When tier talk gets bad
Tier talk is fun as a meme and corrosive as a lifestyle. If you rate yourself every morning, post is-it-over threads, or repost the hypergamy chart at 3 AM, the problem has moved past your jaw.
Checking your appearance for hours a day is a recognised condition called body dysmorphic disorder, and it is treatable. The NHS page in the receipts below lists the signs. If that sounds like you, talk to a doctor before you open another rating app.
Skip anything that promises a two-tier jump through bone or hormones, too. Bonesmashing and grey-market peptide stacks carry real injury risk, all for a label that half depends on who is rating.
How AscendMe treats tiers
AscendMe is built around what you can change, so it skips the tier verdict. The app tracks body fat trend, training, skin routine, sleep, haircut timing, style tasks and a progress photo timeline shot the same way every time.
Your Ascend Score rises when you do the work, which means the number follows effort instead of a stranger's mood. That is the softmaxxing path, and it still works after the tier memes move on.

Frequently asked questions
What does HTN mean?
HTN means high-tier normie, a looksmaxxing slang term from the PSL rating scale. It describes someone who is good-looking in a normal way, usually mapped to around a 6 out of 10.
What do LTN and MTN mean?
LTN means low-tier normie, around a 4, and MTN means mid-tier normie, around a 5. Both describe the average range of the PSL scale, though forums disagree on the exact numbers.
What is above HTN on the PSL scale?
Chadlite comes after HTN, usually around a 7, followed by Chad at about 8 and meme tiers like Slayer and GigaChad above that.
What PSL rating is average?
Most tier lists treat MTN, around a 5, as average. PSL is meant to be harsher than a normal 1 to 10 scale, so a PSL 5 and an everyday 5 do not mean the same thing.
What is the female version of HTN?
The female ladder swaps normie for Becky: LTB, MTB and HTB, followed by Stacylite and Stacy.
Can you go from MTN to HTN?
Often, yes. Most visible jumps come from leanness, a better haircut, clear skin, grooming, posture, style and better photos rather than any change to bone structure.
